My Sock Just Ate My Homework (an Ode to Pi Day)
My sock just ate my homework
Right before my very eyes
My sock just ate my homework
It read that it was pie
I said no, pi is an answer
The ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter
Dessert pie evenly divides into eight
One is a number, the other’s served on a plate
See, the English language is super strange
The ending between the two words is changed
A dessert pie carries an e on its end
The other pi is a number that never ends
We round down its value to three dot one four
But its digits roll on, forevermore

An original poem by Brandie Van Hartesvelt
An excerpt from my upcoming children’s poetry book
